Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs: No Server Versions. Comparation with AMD

performance

Intel’s 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs represent a significant leap in microprocessor technology. These processors prioritize high performance, enhanced AI, and faster memory speeds.

Raptor Lake, Intel’s codename for its 13th-generation Core processors, uses a hybrid architecture with Raptor Cove performance cores and Gracemont efficient cores. First released on October 20, 2022, mobile versions are anticipated by year’s end. Like Alder Lake, Raptor Lake utilizes Intel’s Intel 7 process. It features up to 24 cores (8 P-cores + 16 E-cores) and 32 threads, remaining socket compatible with LGA 1700 Alder Lake systems.

According to Intel, Raptor Lake was developed to leverage process improvements before the delayed launch of Meteor Lake.

On January 3, 2023, at CES 2023, Intel unveiled new desktop and mobile Raptor Lake CPUs, including the N-Series processors consisting solely of energy-efficient cores. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raptor_Lake)

Raptor Lake is a direct competitor to the AMD Ryzen 7000 series, which debuted on September 27, 2022.

Design and Architecture

Raptor Lake CPUs are expected to continue the hybrid architecture of Alder Lake, utilizing both Performance-cores (P-cores) and Efficient-cores (E-cores) to balance performance and energy efficiency. An increased core count is also anticipated, potentially boosting processing power.

Built upon the Alder Lake architecture using the refined Intel 7nm process, Raptor Lake evolves the hybrid core design with P-cores and E-cores. The primary improvement lies in the increased P-core count, enhancing both single-threaded and multi-threaded performance for demanding applications.

Server Variant

While Intel traditionally offers Xeon processors for server applications, a dedicated server variant will not be released under the Raptor Lake name.

Frequency, Cores Amount

CPU frequency varies by model. Refer to the model list below for comparisons. Lower frequency typically indicates more efficient operation.

  • Up to 8 Raptor Cove performance cores (P-core)
  • Up to 16 Gracemont efficient cores (E-core)

Memory

Raptor Lake CPUs are expected to natively support DDR5 memory, potentially increasing memory speed and system performance. DDR5 promises double the speed of DDR4 with reduced power consumption. DDR4 support is also likely for compatibility with older systems.

AI

Raptor Lake CPUs are likely to feature enhanced AI capabilities compared to Alder Lake, potentially improving features like noise suppression and video upscaling. Specific AI improvements remain to be seen, check back for news.

Socket

Intel continues to use the LGA 1700 socket, first introduced with Alder Lake.
